Lake Ioannina Ride

Calm turquoise water reflects the surrounding green hills and distant Pindus mountains. A white Piaggio scooter is parked at a stone railing overlooking the lake, with the small island of Nissi and its cypress trees visible in the middle distance. Warm Mediterranean light, wildflowers along the roadside, clear blue sky with a few wispy clouds. The mood is relaxed, inviting, and quintessentially Greek summer. | photorealistic | landscape

The most peaceful way to fall in love with Ioannina — a 40-kilometre circular ride around Lake Pamvotida, with lakeside tavernas, reed beds and mountain panoramas that keep tempting you to stop for photos.

Route overview

Starting from the collection point near the old town, head south along the lakeside road before continuing west through quiet neighbourhoods. The road opens out on the western shore — flat, smooth and with very little traffic — offering uninterrupted views of Mount Mitsikeli.

Halfway around the route, you reach the viewpoint opposite the Island. From here, the Monastery of Pantokrator and the cypress trees seem almost within reach. It is the best spot for a photo and an ideal stop for Greek coffee by the lake.

Key stops

  • Litharitsia Viewpoint — panoramic views over the lake and the rooftops of the old town, especially beautiful at sunset.
  • Island Ferry Pier — park the scooter and take the boat across to visit the monasteries and the Ali Pasha Museum.
  • Detour to Perama Cave — a short detour leads to one of Greece’s most impressive caves.
  • Lakeside fish tavernas — on the western shore, you will find family-run tavernas serving fresh trout, eel and crayfish.

The route is flat, with an easy road and very little traffic, making it suitable for new riders and couples looking for an effortless half-day ride. We provide helmets, a top box for your bag and a phone mount so you can follow the GPS route sent to you before departure.

This is the ride we recommend to every visitor on their first day in Ioannina — it sets the tone for everything Epirus has to offer.

Return to the collection point through the narrow streets of the old town, passing the Byzantine Museum and the lakeside promenade where locals take their evening walk. The entire circuit fits comfortably into a morning or afternoon, leaving time to explore Ioannina on foot — or plan tomorrow’s mountain route.
